COVID-19: impact on administrative procedures

Third-country nationals prevented from leaving Belgium for reasons of force majeure

A third-country national who is prevented from leaving Belgium for reasons of force majeure (quarantine, flight cancellation, border closure, etc.) may request authorization to extend his/her stay.

This request must be introduced to the municipal administration of the place of residence.

The applicant is required to include the following information and documents :

  • a copy of his/her passport (number and period of validity, personal data, pages used);
  • a travel health insurance valid for the duration of the requested extension with a minimum cover of 30,000 euros valid for the entire Schengen territory;
  • a letter explaining why he/she cannot leave the Schengen area on the scheduled date;
  • if possible, the documents confirming that it is impossible to leave the territory;
  • the residential address in Belgium;
  • a contact email address ;
  • if possible, a plane ticket with the new return date.

The decision shall be communicated to the applicant by the municipal administration.
